Weeds do not grow through artificial turf. They grow in it. Windblown seed lands in the infill, catches in the organic debris that collects along seams and against block walls, and roots in that shallow layer. That is why turf weeds are always at the perimeter and never in the middle, and why treating the lawn like a flower bed does not work.
Where turf weeds start
Edges and border transitions collect the most organic debris, which is what holds enough moisture for a seed to take. Turf meeting a decomposed-granite bed or a block wall base is the usual first failure point.
Seams open slightly as they age, and the gap is a perfect seedbed. Left alone, root growth widens the seam, which is a repair, not a cleaning.
Drip emitters aimed at nearby planting overspray onto the turf perimeter and irrigate the exact strip where the seed sits.

How do weeds get into artificial turf at all?
From above, not below. Properly installed turf sits on a compacted base over a weed barrier, so nothing is coming up through it. Windblown seed lands in the infill and in the debris along the seams, and roots in that thin organic layer. Keeping the edges clear is most of the prevention.
Is the pre-emergent safe around my dogs?
The pet-safe formulations we use as standard are. If you want a conventional product for a heavier problem we will use it, and we will tell you the re-entry interval rather than leaving you to guess.
My seam is opening up. Can you fix it?
Small seam separations we can reseal on site. Anything past that is an installation repair and we will refer you to an installer rather than making it worse. We will send you the photos either way.
